Life in the Kitchen with Asparagus

I love cooking for a crush. The forethought, the shopping and preparation, the delicious smells once he arrives at your door, the oo-ing and ahh-ing at tasting something fabulous… Don’t get me wrong, I’m not asking to be barefoot, pregnant, and wearing an apron in the kitchen for the rest of my life. But there is something to be said about cooking for more than just one.

The main problem with only having one mouth of feed is that there’s only so much praise you can give yourself. No. That’s not it. What’s difficult is having enough ingredients on hand to make a variety of meals without having foods go bad week after week. With this problem in mind, and the fact that I’m currently unemployed, lead me to seek innovative ways of grocery shopping and preparing foods.

While taking the dogs for a walk down the main street rather than the park, one such solution jumped out from a wee produce shop, smacked me in the face and said, “I’M A GIANT BUNCH OF ASPARAGUS FOR ONLY $1!” Ok, it might have been way past its prime, with perhaps just one day of life left before complete destruction, but ONE DOLLAR!! Come on!

That afternoon, I fried the asparagus in far too much butter and a pinch of lemon juice, then pureed the lot of it in my sexy KitchenAid. Into a ziplock bag, labeled, and thrown into my freezer.

‘Cause really, who doesn’t wish they always had a bag of asparagus puree on hand?!
